Do you ever wonder what the desert really is? Why it is called a desert? Or what is really out there? To most people the desert is probably a dry, sandy and empty place. If you ask them what the desert is, they might say it is a wasteland. I disagree. The desert is much more than a wasteland or an empty place. It is actually filled with wildlife, history and mystery.
To us, The REAL Desert Dogs, the desert is a fantastic place. A place of liberty from the city life. A place of fun and adventure. A place of peace.
What is a desert? This question can be answered in more than one way. A desert is a dry area created by global circulation patterns. A desert is also a arid land with meager rainfall that supports only sparse vegetation and a limited population of people and animals.
Technicially a desert is “a landscape or region that receives an extremely low amount of precipitation, less than enough to support growth of most plants. Deserts are defined as areas with an average annual precipitation of less than 250 millimetres (10 in) per year” – Wikipedia
Why is it called a “desert”? The noun desert ‘barren region’ and the verb desert ‘abandon’ both come ultimately from dēsertus, the past participle of Latin dēserere ‘abandon’. This was a compound verb formed from the prefix dē- denoting reversal and serere ‘join’ (a derivative of which gave English ‘serried ranks’).
What is really out there? The desert holds many archeological secrets, which is what makes it so fascinating. The desert is also filled with wildlife. Most of which stay hidden until either rainfall comes or in the evenings. The desert landscape hides things very well over distances. The colors of the landscape along with the peaks and valleys keep things very well hidden. It is only until you take the time to walk slowly through a desert will you realize just how many secrets the desert really holds.
What is the desert to you??
