Duain Preitz may have had good intentions when he opened up his Best of Buddies rescue shelter for dogs in Rosamond, Calif., but it wasn’t in him to actually care for the animals he collected. So, when animal control decided to put a stop to Preitz’s operation, what they found was horrifying to anyone who cares about the plight of dogs.
Animal Control is treating Preitz’s case as a hoarder. That’s right. This man collected animals, but never took care of them. By the time he was arrested (January 2012), there were 215 animals at his home, including horses, pigs, ducks, chickens, dogs, and cats. These animals were all taken by more reputable animal shelters. Fifteen dogs needed immediate medical attention, and a number of dead animals were found too (number not disclosed).
While Preitz claims that the county is the one trying to make him look bad, a very quick Google search reveals that Preitz’s operation has had a bad name for a long time. One disturbing thread dated February 2009 on Ashleyandhobie.com describes a dog named Hershey, which was rescued by Best of Buddies. It didn’t take long for Preitz’s reputation as a hoarder of animals to come up, and then desperate pleas from more established animal rescues to get Hershey out of Preitz’s care, citing documents from Rosamond’s Planning Department and Animal Control.
While this was a bad story, it does end on a happy note. As of a few days ago, all of the animals have been relocated to more reputable animal shelters.
